Brazilian support player Anderson “444″ Santos passed away this morning, February 6, 2020, in an intensive care unit from Manaus, Brazil due to COVID-19 respiratory complications.
444 last played for paiN Gaming with whom he competed at the MDL Disneyland Paris Major and EPICENTER Major in 2019 and in 2020 he got to play at the DreamLeague Leipzig Major before the Dota Pro Circuit was entirely canceled due to the pandemic.
paiN Gaming were forced to shut down the Dota 2 team in April 2020 and released their entire roster, 444 remaining without a team since then. According to the Brazilian publication Globoesporte, he tested positive for COVID-19 last month, along with three other members of his family. He didn’t have a swift recovery and on January 21 the Dota 2 SA community raised R$ 6,000 to help him with the medication and oxygen treatment costs.
Due to the lack of beds at the intensive care unit in his home city, 444 underwent his treatment between home care and hospital care for the whole time. On January 23, Anderson had an infection caused by low blood oxygenation but was slowly recovering, Globoesporte reports. This Saturday he was hospitalized at ICU with breathing difficulty and passed away.
The Dota 2 community mourns his early departure. We express our deepest condolences to his family, friends and fans.
Rest in peace, 444.
