After several reports spoke of the addition of Kim “Khan” Dong-ha to 2019 world champions FunPlus Phoenix, the org has finally made the signing official. On top of that, FPX has extended the contract of their second top laner Kim “GimGoon” Han-saem and are keeping everyone else from the Worlds 2019-winning roster for the new 2020 season.
FunPlus Phoenix hoisted the Summoner’s Cup this November, defeating fan-favorites G2 Esports in front of record-breaking audience. The championship came on the back of strong playoffs performance, which saw them drop only two games in three best-of-3’s, sweeping G2 in the grand finals.
Therefore, keeping the same starting five makes sense for FPX. Earlier this week, the club officially confirmed that captain Kim “Doinb” Tae-sang will say for the 2020 season, now also being the first foreign player to secure LPL residence.
LPL has made me who I am today,” Doinb wrote on his official Weibo.
FunPlus Phoenix are coming into Spring 2020 as the heavy favorites. On top of their Worlds title, the team has proven to be absolutely dominant on domestic soil. FPX won both the Spring and Summer regular seasons this year, losing only three series out of 30. In the Summer, FPX also took their first LPL title, beating Royal Never Give Up with a dominant 3-1 in the finals.
FPX are the second LPL team to confirm their 2020 Spring roster. Yesterday, RNG announced a handful of new signings, including Li “xiaolongbao” Xiao-Long to the jungle, Lu “Betty” Yu-Hung as their second bot laner, and the extension of Jian “Uzi” Zi-Hao’s, Xie “Langx” Zhen-Ying’s, and Shi “Ming” Sen-Ming’s contracts.
