The video game industry saw substantial growth in 2020 as a result of the global COVID-19 pandemic, and that growth was reflected in a massive uptick in gaming conversation on Twitter. The social media platform has reported an increase in gaming-related tweets of 75% year-over-year. Additionally, Twitter saw a 49% increase in unique authors discussing gaming.
While the gaming category covers all video games and represents significantly more content than esports specifically, Twitter did highlight several statistics related to esports.
The team most-tweeted-about was FaZe Clan, which continues to see returns from its strategy of blurring the lines between esports and entertainment. In second place was G2 Esports, likely boosted to that position by the fact that the entire Western esports world placed its hopes in G2 to perform at the 2020 League of Legends World Championship. This was one of the primary esports storylines throughout the year.
Twitter also reported the most discussed esports events of the year, with Worlds 2020 unsurprisingly coming in at No. 1. However, second and third place are something of a surprise. With no Counter-Strike: Global Offensive Majors or Dota 2 The International, the first-ever Call of Duty League Championship and the Overwatch League Grand Finals finished in fourth and fifth place. In their stead, fighting game tournament EVO Japan and the final match of Brazil’s CBLoL Split 2 took home second and third place, respectively.
Japan was ranked as the top country in gaming tweet volume, likely contributing to the placement of EVO Japan. Brazil’s esports industry has also been on the rise, and its Split 2 finals pitted two of the region’s most prominent esports organizations, INTZ and paiN Gaming against one another with a trip to Worlds 2020 on the line.
