Fans Look Back At Failed ’90s Gaming Mascots From Boogerman To Mo Hawk

The '90s saw a huge boom in platformers with the shift to 3D ushered in by Super Mario 64, spawning a whole host of still-beloved mascots and series like Crash Bandicoot and Spyro. But not every '90s creation kept the same momentum – plenty were dead on arrival. That's what fans have been discussing, whether it's forgotten relics like Boogerman or knockoffs like Awesome Possum.

Lara Croft, Sonic, Earthworm Jim, Croc, Banjo-Kazooie, and Kirby solidified themselves as gaming icons back in the '90s, but this Resetera thread is dedicated to figuring out "who the worst failed '90s gaming mascot character was". First up is Awesome Possum whose catchphrase was, amazingly, "I'm awesome!" His arch-nemesis is none other than Dr Machino – think Crash Bandicoot versus Eggman but with bootleg action figures from Poundland.

Another commenter chimed in with Bubsy, a character who is still getting games to this day with the latest launching in 2017. If you haven't heard of them though, you're not alone – The Woolies Strike Back has an all-time peak of 34 players. He's an egotistical bobcat who can break the fourth wall, wearing nothing but a white shirt with an exclamation mark. He was designed specifically to compete with Mario and Sonic, but evidently, that didn't pan out.

Perhaps the most bizarre of the lot is Mo Hawk & Headphone Jack, predating the more popular Jak and Daxter. It's like calling your game Afro & USB Port. Published by THQ, it was based on Sonic to again compete with Sega's own mascot. But it was poorly received due to its nauseating rotating screen, making it a headache to play while also being a riff on what many described as a better series.

Some mentioned Croc and Gex, others yelled them out of the thread, while some brought up the likes of Wild Woody, Jersey Devil, Cool Spot, Boogerman, Acro-bat, Kang Fu, Rollo the Rescue, Rocky Rodent, Soccer Kid, Eggs of Steel, and 40 Winks. The latter even had the tagline, "Move over Mario…" Mario did not move over.
