You probably know Preddie Prinze Jr. from the Scooby-Doo movies or She's All That, but he's voiced some beloved characters over the years, too, like Kanan Jarrus in Star Wars: Rebels, James Vega in Mass Effect 3, and Iron Bull in Dragon Age: Inquisition. From that whole line-up, including the movies, Iron Bull was his favourite.
"The Iron Bull is the one, that's the voice that's my favourite character I've ever played, ever. And it's a video game," Prinze Jr. said in an interview with Original Funko. "It's not from a big movie that made $100 million, it's not from Scooby or She's All That. It's a giant bull-looking massive buff guy, and they wanted this linebacker bro voice, like 'Hey, what's up', and it didn't feel right.
"So, we started experimenting with voices… from Thunder and Pete from the Mickey Mouse club to Winston, 'We shall not flag or fail', and we eventually smushed those together and it became the Iron Bull."
Prinze Jr. said he loved the character because he was loyal and tough, but also non-judgemental, and those six weeks he spent recording lines for Dragon Age were "the most fun I ever had in my entire career". He went as far as to say that he prefers Iron Bull to Kanan, his Jedi teacher character from Rebels, despite loving Kanan.
The Iron Bull, if you haven't played Inquisition, is a giant, buff, one-eyed Qunari companion with an eyepatch, and he's the leader of the Bull's Chargers. They're a band of mercenaries who Iron Bull formed after working for Fisher's Bleeders, another company, but he wasn't fond of Fisher's management and so he formed a coup and took most of Fisher's employees with him. Just casual mercenary stuff.
Freddie Prinze. Jr voiced the two BioWare characters back-to-back, with Mass Effect 3 launching in 2012 and Dragon Age: Inquisition in 2014, so you might've noticed some feint similarities between James Vega and Iron Bull, but one stuck with him more than any other character he played. And who can blame him? Iron Bull is a hunk.
