GTA Is Closing In On Pokemon In Terms Of Total Games Sold

Grand Theft Auto has now sold 345 million games when accounting for all of its releases as it closes in on Pokemon’s total.

The success of GTA 5 is nothing short of phenomenal. Complain about the lack of concrete GTA 6 news all you want, but until GTA 5’s sales start to drop, a sequel just isn’t going to happen. Rockstar’s latest update revealed the latest installment in the GTA franchise now sits at 145 million units sold, and it shows no signs of slowing down.

Perhaps an even more impressive stat is, according to TweakTown, GTA’s total sales as a franchise have now hit 345 million games sold. The most staggering part of that is 42% of those sales can be attributed to GTA 5. It also means the GTA franchise is closing in on Pokemon’s total video game sales. What a way to ruin Pokemon’s 25th birthday that would be.

While GTA has sold 345 million games, Pokemon has shifted 368 million. It’s unclear what titles TweakTown is including in these figures, but it’s assumed it accounts for all Pokemon games ever released. Most of that gargantuan number can be attributed to its main series of games. Pokemon Red, Blue, and Yellow alone make up almost 50 million of that number. The next best seller for Pokemon was Gold, Silver, and Crystal which sold just shy of 30 million copies.

If Pokemon’s 368 million does account for every Pokemon game ever released, that makes GTA’s ever-increasing number even more impressive. Between its numerous spinoffs, the Pokemon video game series is made up of far more titles than GTA. However, as is demonstrated by its top two sellers, Pokemon’s sales seem to be more evenly distributed while GTA 5 acts as a pretty big outlier for its own franchise.

The coming months will be an interesting time for both franchises. Rockstar recently revealed that GTA 5’s new-gen editions will arrive in November 2021. While that could see the game’s sales surge once again, odds are the remakes of Diamond and Pearl will already be on the market, boosting Pokemon’s number. That will be followed by the release of Pokemon Legends: Arceus in early 2022.
