The rumours that Square Enix’s Avengers project is inspired by Destiny look like they might be true, as the first details leak out.
Square Enix’s Avengers game was announced way back in January 2017 and since then there hasn’t been a scrap of information about it.
There haven’t been any major leaks either, although the longstanding rumour is that it was originally influenced by Destiny, and that the backlash against Star Wars: Battlefront II’s loot boxes caused a rethink – which in turn explains why it still hasn’t been seen in public yet.
It will be at E3 next month though, and an unintentionally detailed description of the game on an official E3 website suggests it’s still a multiplayer focused co-op game.
The description of an E3 panel about the game used to describe it as follows, before the juicer details were edited out:
This is the defining Avengers gaming experience: an epic action-adventure that combines cinematic storytelling with continuous single-player and co-operative gameplay … assemble in teams up to four players, master extraordinary abilities, customise your heroes to fit your playstyle, and combine powers to defend an ever-expanding world under constant threat.
Of course, the Internet was there to take a screenshot before the details were removed, and it certainly sounds like something that might have been inspired by Destiny – which was all the rage back in 2017.
It’s still not much to go on though and it’s going to be particularly interesting to see which heroes exactly are being customised.
Does it mean the usual roster of Iron Man, Captain America, and co. or are you going to be inventing your own superheroes and customising them?
Only time will tell. 10 days to be exact, as Square Enix is planning to reveal all on Monday, 10 June at 2am BST. And if you don’t want to stay up for that we’ll have all the news for you ready in the morning.
