Nintendo has this week added another hentai game onto its digital Nintendo Switch eShop and remarkably its only rated PEGI 12 in the UK.
For those unaware, Hentai is described by the Oxford Dictionary as “a subgenre of Japanese manga, anime, computer games, etc., characterised by explicit sexual themes and imagery.”
As spotted by Video Games Chronicle, ‘Hentai Uni’ by Big Way Games was released on April 11 and describes itself as a puzzle game 'that can be played with one hand.'
Ahem.
The game itself features "4 girls and 12 beautifully drawn scenes" which will supposedly 'cheer you up and help you relax'.
If you're curious to know how, this uploaded gameplay on YouTube shows what you can expect to see, as anime characters remove their clothes with every successful puzzle; Until eventually they're completely topless.
Although the Nintendo website does require users to enter their age before they can view the game on conventional website browsers, it's still visible on the front page of Nintendo Switch storefront.
Putting to one side the fact Nintendo has greenlit the game on the eshop in the first place, what seems even more remarkable is that the game has only been rated PEGI 12 by the UK VSC rating board.
For those who don't know, here's the official description of what is allowed for a PEGI 12 game:
"While sex may not be shown, there may be sexual innuendo and sexual activity can be implied (eg a couple getting into bed). The type of suggestive posing and dancing that's familiar from music videos may also be allowed, although there will be no sexual nudity."
It's possible for parents to use parental controls on the Nintendo Switch to prevent children from playing games that are inappropriate for their age.
However, in this case it doesn't help as the restrictions are based on the PEGI ratings, and 'Hentai Uni' has seemingly been clarified as suitable for 12 year olds.
In the US, 'Hentai Uni' has been rated M for mature, and advised for players 17 and older. Which makes sense when you take a closer look at the gameplay linked above.
Daily Star has contacted the VSC ratings board – who review and set the PEGI rating for each new release – for comment and to check that the game has been correctly rated in accordance to their own PEGI Ratings.
