The Champions of Hyrule take center stage in the latest trailer for Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity, which was shown during the Tokyo Game Show 2020 digital event.
In The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, the four Champions were the representatives of the races of Hyrule, who must pilot the mighty Divine Beasts in the battle against Calamity Ganon. They were slain during the Great Calamity and had their spirits bound to the Divine Beasts, and Link must free them from their imprisonment a century later in Breath of the Wild. If Link wins the aid of the Champions, then they will perform a massive four-way Kamehameha against Calamity Ganon during the final battle and take a considerable chunk of his health away.
The struggle against Calamity Ganon is the focus of Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity, which is the upcoming prequel to Breath of the Wild. The official Nintendo YouTube account has uploaded a new trailer for the game, showing the four Champions of Hyrule in action against the forces of evil.
The Champions are long dead at the beginning of Breath of the Wild, but they can still help Link from beyond the grave with the aid of magic. In Age of Calamity, the player will have the chance to play as the Champions and see more of their story, in the run-up to their defeat at the hands of Calamity Ganon. The trailer also ends with the vital confirmation that people who pre-order the game will receive a special ladle. The forces of Calamity Ganon must be quaking in their boots.
Link remained a silent protagonist in Breath of the Wild. As such, the bulk of the story fell on the other characters, which meant that fans grew closer to the Champions than other people in the game, as we see their story through flashbacks. Age of Calamity finally offers fans the chance to play as the Champions, even if it means just walking them to their deaths, like in Final Fantasy VII: Crisis Core.
Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity will be released for Nintendo Switch on November 20, 2020.
