It’s less than a month until Deathloop releases and Arkane has given a proper explanation for how its PvP mode works.
Fans have always known that Deathloop would sport some kind of PvP function, where two players could duke it out in gunfights. But for the longest time, Arkane hasn’t really explained how it would work.
All that was known was that player character Colt, who seeks to break free of the time loop he’s trapped in, must deal with a rival assassin called Julianna, who could be controlled by either the AI or another player, and seeks to protect the time loop. With the game less than a month away from releasing, Arkane has finally shared concrete info about how this PvP mode works.
During QuakeCon, which began yesterday, game director Dinga Bakaba reiterated that players can take control of Julianna and invade someone else’s game to try and take them out, similar to what the Dark Souls games have.
This option is accessed from the main menu, separate from the main campaign mode, and you get to pick Julianna’s weapons, abilities, and outfit before jumping into either a random stranger’s game or one of your friends’.
It very much sounds like the perfect mode for those who have learned the ins and outs of the map and the time loop, and simply wish to test their skills against players trying to beat the campaign.
There’s no real benefit to playing as Julianna as managing to kill other players doesn’t yield any extra rewards; it’s purely for fun. What’s more, Julianna and Colt possess similar equipment and abilities so battles will be based purely on skill.
Although Julianna is at a distinct disadvantage since she can only die once, and it is game over. Colt, meanwhile, can acquire an ability that lets him immediately come back to life two more times.
While Colt players won’t have to engage with Julianna and can choose to run or hide from her, you are encouraged to fight back since, if you win against her, she’ll drop valuable loot like high-quality weapons.
