SEGA Launches Esports Project for 'Virtua Fighter'

Virtua Fighter fans will be delighted to learn that SEGA is now reviving the beloved fighter franchise, breathing new life into it through tapping into Esports.

The announcement came in the form of a new trailer showcasing footage of competitive gaming scenes and a small snippet of new cinematics. While much of the project is still under wraps, the move doesn’t come as a surprise, since the video game developer renewed its trademark for Virtua Fighter with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office back in 2018. Of course, there’s also no promise of a new game yet, but according to SEGA’s website, the project “will be restarted as an esports title to commemorate the 60th anniversary of SEGA’s establishment.”

For those unfamiliar, Virtua Fighter is a fighting game franchise that originally debuted back in 1993 on the SEGA Saturn. Over the last three decades, the series has received four additional man installments as well as a series of spinoffs, concluding (at the time) its run with Virtua Fighter 5 Final Showdown on arcade systems as well as the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. Two mobile titles from the franchise were also released in 2011 and 2014, but no full game has since been made.
