A job ad in Japan proves that Sony is creating a next gen VR headset but it’s not clear whether it’s the PSVR 2 or not.
Despite all the fan arguments there aren’t many fundamental differences between the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 in terms of hardware or services, but VR is one thing that Sony has devoted a lot of time to this gen while Microsoft has completely ignored it.
It may not be a big money-spinner yet, but Sony will want to capitalise on their expertise in the next gen and has already said that the PlayStation VR headset will work with the PlayStation 5.
It’s been speculated that they’re likely to create a new headset too, although they’ve never confirmed that – but a new job ad from Japan may have done the job for them.
According to Google Translate the role is to help with ‘development of head-mounted display for next-generation VR’.
But while there’s repeated mentions of ‘next generation VR’ the name PlayStation doesn’t appear anywhere and the listing is from Sony Corp. in general, not Sony Interactive Entertainment.
That may suggest that the headset is meant for PCs and/or is standalone like the Oculus Quest, rather than being a peripheral solely for the PlayStation 5.
Sony has made PC headsets before, although not since the PlayStation VR was released – so it’s hard to guess what is going on exactly.
Given everything they’ve said so far it’s hard to imagine there won’t be a new PlayStation VR headset but it’s unlikely to be the sort of thing Sony will want to focus on until the PlayStation 5 has had a year or two to establish itself.
