Super Smash Bros. Ultimate’s Masahiro Sakurai Shows Off Their Game Builder Garage Creation

Games like Dreams, Mario Maker, and Game Builder Garage act as an ideal way for aspiring game developers to take a stab at the process. While you may need to sift through a lot of average or troll submissions, you’ll often find a stand out game or level that will make you wonder if the creator is already a developer. Such was the case with a particular submission on Game Builder Garage by none other than Super Smash Bros. Ultimate director Masahiro Sakurai.

Sakurai uploaded a video of his creation on Twitter, and it looks simple enough. It seems like a bullet-hell shooter with one giant boss and a few lackeys surrounding it. The player takes control of a pod of some kind with the aim of destroying the boss. An added mechanic by Sakurai is that the acceleration and shoot buttons are the same.

The director added that the music speeds up as the boss’ health becomes less than half, and that’s when the purple discs come in. Sakurai also mentions that the use of a USB mouse makes the creation process much easier, especially when trial and error is involved.

In our review of the game, we said, “Game Builder Garage feels like the perfect place to build a game prototype. You can create a basic idea, see if it works and is fun, and then maybe take that concept into a real game engine development kit – but not much more. It can truly pique the curiosities of kids, and I hope it does, but it’s launched in a world where it has big competition, and the depth and charm of those tutorials which only Nintendo could pull off so well can’t carry the rest of the experience.”

Tekken’s Kazuya was announced as the next character to join the Smash Bros. Ultimate roster during Nintendo’s E3 Direct. He will be coming to Smash Bros. Ultimate later this year for owners of Fighter Pass Volume 2. A deep dive video on Kazuya’s moveset will air on June 28. The 11th and final Fighter Pass character pack is expected to be announced later this year.
