You can watch the first seven minutes of the new Mortal Kombat movie right now, two whole days before it hits theaters and HBO Max.
At the time of typing this, the release of the new Mortal Kombat movies is just 48 hours away. Even though that is really not long in the grand scheme of things, it might be too long to wait for some of you who have been waiting for this film for a very long time. Thankfully, the movie’s creators have shared the first seven minutes of Mortal Kombat on social media to whet your appetite.
You might be fooled into thinking you aren’t watching Mortal Kombat at all for the first two minutes. The setting is pretty serene and not at all fitting of an R-rating. That calm opening is disrupted via the first sight of a sword, quickly followed by a smattering of blood.
The peaceful beginning is then left firmly in the past when a mother and child are frozen solid by Sub Zero. The victims appear to be the wife and son of Scorpion, who catches up with Sub Zero and the two of them clash for what clearly isn’t the first time, and it won’t be the last. That’s when the seven-minute teaser comes to an end, right before you get to see the two iconic fighters come to blows.
Even though Mortal Kombat isn’t even out yet, early signs suggest it is going to be a big success. It has already received a Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. It could also briefly boast having the most viewed red band trailer of all time before that record was topped by The Suicide Squad. Studios have tried and failed to create a successful Mortal Kombat movie twice in the past. It appears to be a case of third time’s the charm.
Movie studios appear to have found the key to creating successful video game-based flicks. Either that or we have collectively decided to significantly lower our standards without realizing. From Detective Pikachu to Sonic the Hedgehog and now Mortal Kombat, gaming movies are great now compared to some absolute disasters in the past.

Josh has been gaming for as long as he can remember. That love began with a mild childhood addiction to the Sega Genesis, or Mega Drive since he lives in the UK. Back then, Sonic 2 quickly became his favorite game and as you might have guessed from his picture, the franchise has remained close to his heart ever since. Nowadays, he splits his time between his PS4 and his Switch and spends far too much time playing Fortnite.
