The Elder Scrolls series is a tentpole fantasy RPG franchise that has been running since the mid-90s with Elder Scrolls: Arena. Bethesda has been putting out regular installments since then, with Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim being one of the most popular games of all time and Elder Scrolls Online being a thriving MMO to this day.
The Elder Scrolls Games are known for their vast open worlds, numerous quests, side quests, and treasures to be found, and their storytelling. Those vast open worlds are what we are going to be looking at today as we count down the biggest worlds in the Elder Scrolls series.
7 The Spin-Offs
This entry is reserved for the other Elder Scrolls titles. This includes The Elder Scrolls Adventures: Redguard, An Elder Scrolls Legend: Battlespire, and the Elder Scrolls Travels series of titles. Of these, Elder Scrolls Adventures: Redguard is probably the one with the largest map, as it offers a handful of cities for the player to explore, though the game itself is linear instead of open-world.
Battlespire was intended to be a spin-off to Daggerfall, and it all takes place in the school of Battlespire, which has very little exploration to offer. The Elder Scrolls Travels games are dungeon-based titles made for early-2000s Nokia phones, so you can’t really explore these either. Finally, there is The Elder Scrolls: Legends, which is a card game — so you can’t explore at all.
The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind is a favorite for many longtime Elder Scrolls fans, but it’s actually the smallest of the mainline titles in terms of sheer size. At about 16 km in total size, Morrowind is actually the smallest of the main titles by far.
The game takes place in the Vvardenfell, an island in the Dark Elves’ home of Morrowind. The player character is a prophecied hero known as the Nerevarine, a fabled protector of Morrowind. In the Bloodmoon expansion, the island of Solstheim is added to the playable area.
Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is the most popular game of the series, aided by the fact that it has been re-released several times. The game takes place in the Skyrim province of Tamriel, home to the Nordic people. The player character is the Dragonborn of prophecy, fated to slay the black dragon Alduin and save all of reality from his rending.
The Dawnguard and Dragonborn expansions add a fair amount of explorable area, the latter also ironically adding the Morrowind isle of Solstheim. Skyrim more than doubles the area of Morrowind, coming out to about 37km.
Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion is a close second to Skyrim in terms of popularity. By contrast, it’s actually a little bigger than Skyrim at 41km. The player gets to explore Cyrodiil, the province that serves as the throne of the Empire. Oblivion has two expansions, the Knights of the Nine and the Shivering Isles, the latter of which adds about another 10km of space to explore.
This game finds the player becoming the Hero of Kvatch, a prisoner in Imperial City who is given the Amulet of Kings by Emperor Uriel Septim VII shortly before the emperor is assassinated. This triggers a series of events that end with the Hero of Kvatch saving Tamriel from an invasion by the Daedric Prince, Mehrunes Dagon, and a host of demons from the realm of Oblivion.
Officially speaking, The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall is the biggest Elder Scrolls game. Its size is confirmed at around 161,000 km of procedurally-generated world for the player to explore and find quests within. This means each player’s experience is unique outside of the main story of the game. It takes place in Lilac Bay and stars the player character known as “the Agent,” who was sent to Lilac Bay by Emperor Uriel Septim VII himself.
The game ultimately results in the “Warp in the West” which merged roughly 44 kingdoms into four and brought peace to the region. As previously stated, this game was intended to have an expansion in Battlespire, but that ended up becoming its own game.
2 Elder Scrolls Online
Elder Scrolls Online, being an MMORPG, has an unfair advantage over the other Elder Scrolls titles. It’s in constant development and expansions are frequently being rolled out for it. However, it’s also worth mentioning that the game is being meticulously designed, unlike Daggerfall. Elder Scrolls Online doesn’t use procedural generation to build its world. Everything was designed as it is by the developers.
The game is sectioned off into zones, so it isn’t a continuous world in the way that Daggerfall, Skyrim, and the rest of the Elder Scrolls games are. That said, all of the current zones together measure up to about 400km in size, so it does exceed the size of Daggerfall.
1 Elder Scrolls: Arena
However, the largest Elder Scrolls game to date is — technically — Elder Scrolls: Arena. The game map is made up of the entire continent of Tamriel, upon which every other Elder Scrolls game takes place. The game was initially intended to be an arena fighter, as the name suggests. However, it turned into an RPG over the course of development. The player is nominally supposed to be able to explore the entire continent. Bethesda claims that the game is about 9,656,000 km, while other sources claim it’s about 6,000,000 km, both of which would dwarf just about every other RPG ever made.
However, there are several catches to that size. The main one is that the game apparently just starts looping terrain on the player when they try to walk from town to town, so that size is both not really there but also technically infinite. That said, the area being infinite would also technically make it the largest Elder Scrolls game ever made. However, even that isn’t really true, as the game just starts breaking down after a while. All in all, Elder Scrolls: Arena is technically the largest Elder Scrolls game ever made, it just has several asterisks listed next to that achievement.
