The Steam Summer Sale, the biggest PC platform’s biggest sale of the year, kicked off on Tuesday, bringing tons of deals on everything from AAA hits to cult indie darlings.
As in previous years, there’s a meta minigame to go along with the festivities. This year, team up with other Steam customers in a “Steam Grand Prix” racing-themed game. Buying games, completing quests, and earning achievements will upgrade your “boost meter,” allowing your team’s vehicle to speed ahead on the road and redeem points at the “Pit Stop”.
Steam faces some stiff competition this year, with the Epic Games Store aggressively courting PC gamers with a new free game every week for the rest of the year and picking up major exclusives. Epic even ran a summer sale of its own back in May, dubbed the Epic Mega Sale, which provided a blanket $10 discount across the platform. Another rival, GOG, wrapped up its “Summer Sale Festival” during this year’s E3 convention.
Valve is holding its own though, offering some deep discounts on hundreds of PC games, including Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, Soulcalibur 6, and Yakuza 0. However, Steam’s servers weren’t prepared to handle the onslaught of traffic as soon as the sale started, and we’re still getting intermittent 502 errors.
The Steam Summer Sale runs from Tuesday, June 25 to Tuesday, July 9.
