These were the best-selling games on Steam in 2019

It’s the end of another year, and Valve has once again let the world know which games on Steam sold the most over the last 12 months. Steam’s Best of 2019 event broke down some of the platform’s best-selling new and returning games, the most played games, and the most popular games to leave early access this year. It also put most all of them on sale.

If you’ve looked at this list in past years, a few of the games on the best-sellers list won’t be much of a surprise for you. Games like Grand Theft Auto 5, Dota 2, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, and Rainbow Six Siege all sit near the top of the charts. Perhaps one of the year’s most surprising top sellers is Destiny 2, which only came to the platform in October. It’s also worth noting that these top sellers are measured in terms of gross revenue earned this year, which is why a few free-to-play titles are on the list.

As for new games, this year had quite a mix of titles. Fall releases like Halo: The Master Chief Collection ended up high on the list, along with Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order and the new PC port of Red Dead Redemption 2. But the year’s early successes, like Resident Evil 2 and Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, weren’t absent either. Smaller games like Remnant: From the Ashes and Mordhau also made appearances as some of the top games of the year.

The highest selling games to leave early access in 2019 run through just about every genre you can imagine. Competitive shooters like Battalion 1944, Ring of Elysium and Hunt: Showdown all make appearances. But so do a few building and exploring games like Space Engineers, Astroneer, My Time at Portia, and Oxygen Not Included. Survival game Green Hell, strategic card-based dungeon crawler Slay the Spire, Beat Saber, and PC Building Simulator round out the inclusions for early access.
