Bungie abandoning Destiny 2’s pinnacle weapon system in Shadowkeep

In its final weekly blog post before Shadowkeep’s launch for Destiny 2, Bungie revealed that it’s doing away with the pinnacle weapon system first introduced in Forsaken last year.

Expanded in Black Armory and future seasons, pinnacle weapons were powerful guns with completely unique perks — a half step between a normal Destiny weapon and powerful Exotics. The studio will replace the pinnacle system with less powerful ritual weapons.

Before revealing the new ritual weapons for Shadowkeep and Season of the Undying, the studio broke down why it’s killing the pinnacle weapon system. According to Bungie, creating three weapons with completely unique perks every season created a power issue. The weapons were too potent, and it forced players into using similar loadouts in all activities.

Ritual weapons are an answer to that problem. Instead of having perks, ritual weapons now have special, curated roles. These are fully masterworked weapons designed by Bungie that drop with the same set of synergistic perks every time, rather than randomly rolled weapons.

In Shadowkeep and Season of the Undying, players can pick up the Edgewise machine gun from the Vanguard, Randy’s Throwing Knife scout rifle from the Crucible, and the Exit Strategy submachine gun from Gambit. Bungie hasn’t announced which perk combinations will come on each weapon yet.

As for previous pinnacle weapons, Bungie intends to nerf all the damage dealing perks in Shadowkeep:

  • Rampage
  • Kill Clip
  • Swashbuckler
  • Multikill Clip
  • Desperado
  • Surrounded
  • Master of Arms
  • Onslaught

These perks now offer a similar damage increase in PvE that they do in PvP — significantly less than what they’re currently doing.

Bungie will launch Destiny 2: Shadowkeep and the Season of the Undying for PlayStation 4, Windows PC, and Xbox One on Tuesday, Oct. 1. The Google Stadia version will come out later this year.
