Nostalgia and warm, fuzzy feelings aren’t always enough to make a remake of an old video game a success.
But in this case, the Spyro Reignited Trilogy effortlessly holds up as a fantastic game with all the original charm – even if you ignore the floods of childhood memories it brings back.
The Reignited Trilogy has bound together the three original games, which were originally developed for PlayStation. And it has now been developed for Nintendo Switch.
For those who are new to the world of the iconic purple dragon, the Reignited Trilogy follows Spyro and his dragonfly companion Sparx.
In the platform video game they swoop, charge and spew flames on all the different types of villains they meet so they can restore peace across the realm.
Spyro Reignited Trilogy for Nintendo Switch includes Spyro the Dragon, which came out in 1998, Spyro 2 Ripto’s Rage! from 1999 and Spyro Year of the Dragon from 2000 all tied together in a neat little package.
That means you’re getting a serious amount of gameplay for your buck – and they have all received a modern-day makeover from the core and up.
Expect the same old world we know and love, with charming background music, loveable characters and bright colours in stunning HD.
And it’s a visual feast for those who aren’t accustomed to the purple dragon also.
Each world and environment in the individual games look vibrant and appealing on the hybrid console’s portable screen.
Sure, compare the Switch port to that of PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, the quality may not seem quite as sharp.
But on its own, without the comparison, the quality of the game looks amazing.
And especially if you dock the Switch, it does the modern revamp of the game massive justice.
It’s also a joy for the ears, as the soundtracks that accompany the many levels will have you smiling while you glide from treetop to mountain side.
The controls are as you remember, and yes – the original cheats still work for those wondering.
Fans of the original games won’t be too surprised at the content of the games, as the gameplay feels largely untouched.
And with the wave of nostalgia that came rushing over me, I remembered how tricky I found the original games. I found myself having to repeat levels several times to find all the objects.
There are a serious amount of levels packed in each game, and I became obsessed with collecting gems – as well as listening to every word of dialogue.
It’s safe to say the Spyro Reignited Trilogy draws you in, and fans of classic video games where you jump around on platforms to collect a certain amount of something won’t be disappointed.
Each game has its own unique feeling to it, and even additional playable characters in the Year of the Dragon.
One of the only downsides is that while each game feels like a slight evolution – the objectives remain the same.
You might get slightly bored of hunting gems, talismans and eggs, but it definitely kept me entertained for an hour here and there.
This is what makes it perfect for Nintendo Switch – it’s pick up and play ability.
So while it can get repetitive, it’s still a great excuse to indulge in some nostalgia in a magical world.
Another downside is the long loading screens in which you watch the protagonist glide in the air – which can get a bit boring after a few minutes.
